Stem Sisters project

Year 5 & 6 make some important discoveries......

This term our Year 6 and Year 5 students have begun their exploration of some of the incredible work of some of the most influential women in science. This is part of the Stem Sisters project that the LEAP  schools are taking part in, run by the charity HMDT Music. The first workshops have focused on Mary Anning and her fascinating discoveries of fossils in Lyme Regis.

Brianna (yr 6 ) "I learnt loads of new facts about fossils" Debbie (yr 6) "We got to make our own fossils" Jaciara (yr 6) "I enjoyed the fact that Mary Anning came to life and ran our session!" Ellis (yr 6) "I learnt Mary Anning didn’t become known for what she discovered until after she’d died."

The children used salt dough and shells to show how the markings of fossils have been imprinted into the rocks over millions of years.

’Year 6 have also been producing their own independent PowerPoint presentations, focusing on their oracy skills to demonstrate what they have learnt in the workshops and speak independently in front of a live audience. Thank you HMDT - we look forward to the next creative STEM Sisters session.
