Pupil Voice & Leadership
We pride ourselves at Kingsmead as having a strong pupil voice. Through our School Council, our JRSO team and our subject ambassadors and champions, we have a whole- school commitment to listening to the views, wishes and experiences of all children in our school. We value the views of our children, from nursery to year 6.
The School Council
The School Council is made up of representatives (a boy and a girl) from each of the classes from Year 1 to Year 6. They meet fortnightly to discuss issues of importance to their classes. They can invite key people to their meetings if they feel it is necessary (for example, the Headteacher, the Premises Manager or the School Chef). After meetings they feed back their decisions and recommendations to their classes. School Councillors are elected annually at a School Council Election, where all children in years 1 to 6 vote for the two School Councillors who they feel will best represent their class. A polling station is set up for the School Council Election, with class nomination lists and a ballot box. The children learn about the democratic process through first hand experience during our Kingsmead School Council elections.
We are incredibly lucky at Kingsmead to have such dedicated and passionate children! Each subject, from Music & Art to Geography & History, has its own subject ambassadors. We have STEM ambassadors too (you can find out more about the STEM club on our Science page) and Sports, RE, Spanish, Science and Computing ambassadors. These Subject Ambassadors are appointed because of their enthusiasm and passion for that particular area of the curriculum. They use their voice in shaping the curriculum of their subject and meet the subject leads to discuss and evaluate how the curriculum is being taught.
Our Reading Champions help to spread a love of reading throughout the school and are very inventive in how they do this. They have used a hand-made shadow puppets show to deliver a whole school reading assembly, enthusing the whole school about World Book day. They have been responsible for managing a Pop-up book hut to help encourage a love of reading, which has been really popular with all age groups, taking it in turns to read to children. They represent our school and share their ideas at the Hackney wide Reading Champions meetings.
Mental Health Champions
A number of children from Years 3 to Year 6 put themselves forward as Mental Health Champions to support their peers with strategies and activities that can help them to managing their emotions. They received training from One Goal to become Mental Health Champions and have helped to deliver assemblies on Zones of Regulation and help to run the Wellbeing area of our school playground (when the weather permits)!
Junior Road Safety Officers
Kingsmead are proud to be a part of TFL STARS (Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe). This initiative inspires our young people to travel to school sustainably, actively, responsibly and safely, by championing walking, scooting and cycling. Every year we appoint two Yr5 Junior Road Safety Officers who are integral to our road safety and sustainable travel plans. Our JRSO's help to promote Road Safety week across the school with assemblies and competitions. All year round they help to share information about how to be safe on the roads as a pedestrian and promote responsible travelling and road safety.
