    Black History Month 2014

This year, to mark Black History Month, we celebrated soldiers from ethnic minorities who fought in the First World War, 100 years ago

This year, to mark Black History Month, we celebrated soldiers from ethnic minorities who fought in the First World War, 100 years ago. Children learnt about all the different countries that people came from to fight for a common cause. Nursery and Reception classes learnt about the significance of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance. Years 1 and 2 imagined what it must have been like to be  a soldier far away from home and wrote letters home. They also learnt about Eugene Bullard the first black military pilot. Years 3 & 4 designed  recruitment posters and created artworks in the style of black British artist Chris Ofili. Years 5 & 6 looked at First World War poetry and learnt about Walter Tull, an English football player who achieved the rank of Lieutenant and was the first black officer to lead white British soldiers in battle. Some wonderful artwork and displays were created by all the classes as you can see from the photos below.
