Every year we hold School Council elections to find out who our new school councillors will be. Our school council is made up of two elected representatives from each class from years 1 to 6. School councillors bring the views expressed in class meetings to the sessions and feedback is given to the school’s senior leadership team. The ethos of the school council is to consider the views of all and to take steps to produce real change, for the better. We believe that our children can make a difference and are proud of the changes the school council has brought into our school.
Here are some of the important jobs that our school councillors do:
Every year the School Council visits the Houses of Parliament to learn about democracy. Whilst there they have an official tour where they learn about the democratic process and how laws and made. On this trip they explore the challenges and responsibilities that come with being an MP.
At Kingsmead, the mental health champions play a vital role in promoting wellbeing and creating a supportive environment for everyone. The children have been trained to listen, raise awareness and help their peers understand the importance of mental health. They work closely with staff to lead initiatives and ensure that all children know where to find help when they need it. This year they’ve led whole school assemblies on mental health and delivered short workshops to classes teaching them about gratitude and breathing techniques.
We are incredibly lucky at Kingsmead to have such dedicated and passionate children! Each subject, from Maths and English, to Geography and Design and Technology, has its own subject ambassadors. These children are appointed because of their enthusiasm and passion for that particular area of the curriculum. The subject ambassadors use their voice to help shape the curriculum of their subject. They meet the subject leads to discuss and evaluate how the curriculum is being taught. They are also involved in learning walks and the monitoring of their subject.
Our Reading Champions help to spread a love of reading throughout the school and are very inventive in how they do this. They have used a hand-made shadow puppets show to deliver a whole school reading assembly, enthusing the whole school about World Book day. They have been responsible for managing a Pop-up book hut to help encourage a love of reading, which has been really popular with all age groups, taking it in turns to read to children. They represent our school and share their ideas at the Hackney wide Reading Champions meetings.
We have a group of Year 5 & 6 pupils who have put themselves forward to be the school's Eco Warriors and support our Sustainability Leads. The Eco Warriors champion recycling across the school, as well as carrying out waste audits, planting shrubs and trees around the school grounds and sort through our pre-loved school uniform stall.
Kingsmead are proud to be a part of TFL STARS (Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe). This initiative inspires our young people to travel to school sustainably, actively, responsibly and safely, by championing walking, scooting and cycling. Kingsmead's Junior Road Safety Officers who are integral to our road safety and sustainable travel plans. Our JRSO's help to promote Road Safety week across the school with assemblies and competitions. All year round they help to share information about how to be safe on the roads as a pedestrian and promote responsible travelling and road safety.
Children from Years 4 & 5 can volunteer to be Lunchtime Helpers. The Lunchtime Helpers' key role is to ensure a calm and happy dining hall at lunchtime. They support younger children, clean dining tables, sweep the floor and ensure the cutlery containers and water jugs are full.
