The Leap Federation

All children at Kingsmead take part in two hours of P.E. weekly. Lessons include games, gymnastics, athletics, dance and swimming (for year 3 – 6). Our LEAP PE Curriculum is planned around transferrable skills using the head, the heart and the hands (the three Hs).
Through our PE curriculum we aim for all pupils to develop their sporting skills and to understand how important physical exercise is as part of a healthy lifestyle. In addition we have a number of school teams who compete in local competitions and PE is also well-represented in our after-school clubs program.
We regularly have inter LEAP federation sport tournaments including football, netball, dodgeball and table tennis.
Learning to swim is also an important focus with weekly swimming lessons for all children in Years 3 – 6 for at least one term each. Children’s progress is tracked and the children receive certificates recognising the distances that they are able to swim.
At Kingsmead children are taught Gymnastics by a specialist coach who is aided by the class teachers. The children are exposed to a high level of expertise and learn many different skills through gymnastics. All the skills and elements the children learn are based on and developed from the six basic gymnastic shapes:
The children then move on to learn more advanced elements such as:
Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 also use an aerobic warm up to increase their overall fitness levels.
Football is a huge focus and interest at Kingsmead. Both our boys and girls school football teams regularly compete in borough-wide competitions. Our staff football coaches maintain strong links with the community football clubs in our local area and local academy clubs (Arsenal, West Ham and Leyton Orient).

We  have a specialist dance teacher  working at Kingsmead teaching World Dance, who works alongside our African Drumming specialist teacher. Each term different classes have a turn of taking part in weekly lessons, ensuring all children have access to a range of different dance styles.

Our gifted and talented dancers and drummers group (Dynamix) have been selected to perform to an audience of hundreds at both the School Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, and The Barbican, as well as performing to a national conference of Music Specialists from around the country at City Hall.
Kingsmead is a flagship cycling school with cycle training offered to all children in Years 5 & 6. As well as large numbers of pupils coming to school by bike, we have a great number of staff who now cycle to school and we regularly hold Dr Bike sessions (bike maintenance) for the local community.

We have successfully raised funds to purchase our own pool of bikes for children to use from Foundation stage right through to Year 6. We were delighted to have our commitment and enthusiasm for cycling recognised by Transport for London who awarded us Beacon Cycling status.
We provide a range of active sports clubs in our after school clubs All our physical activity clubs are popular, well attended and the children are passionate about learning new skills and techniques.
Every year we hold a whole school Sports Day. The children are split into mixed age group teams which fosters a great sense of of responsibility and team work and our older pupils always rise brilliantly to the task of supporting their younger team members.
The government provides additional funding to improve the provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. Schools must use this money to improve their PE provision and ensure each child has the opportunity to live an active healthy lifestyle. A full report of our PE and Sports Funding Premium and how we spend it can be found at the bottom of the page on our website titled Statutory Information.
